Conversations from the Cullman Center: Reimagining the Ramayana: Vivek Narayanan with Vijay Seshadri
The distinguished poet discusses his new poetry collection inspired by the epic poem, the Ramayana.
In After, Vivek Narayanan offers a collection of poems inspired by Valmiki’s Ramayana, one of Asia’s foundational epic poems. But After does not just come after the Ramayana. In this new book, Narayanan brings the resources of contemporary English poetry to bear on the Sanskrit epic. In a work that has garnered comparison with Christopher Logue’s and Alice Oswald’s reshapings of Homer, and Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red, Narayanan allows the ancient voice of the poem to engage with modern experience, initiating a conversation across time.
Vivek Narayanan researched and wrote After during his 2015–2016 Fellowship at the Library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. He will discuss the book with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Vijay Seshadri.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Vivek Narayanan’s books of poetry include Universal Beach and Life and Times of Mr S. He has been a Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University and a Cullman Center Fellow at the New York Public Library. A full-length collection of his poems in Swedish translation was published in 2015 by the legendary Stockholm-based publisher Wahlström & Widstrand. He teaches creative writing at George Mason University and is a member of the editorial board at Poetry Daily, where he helps to select poems and writes short essays about world poetry.
Vijay Seshadri is the author of five collections of poems: Wild Kingdom, The Long Meadow, The Disappearances, 3 Sections, and That Was Now, This Is Then, along withmany essays, reviews, and memoir fragments. His work has been recognized with a number of honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. He teaches at Sarah Lawrence College.
