Summary
  1. Views of concert singer Marian Anderson spanning the years 1931-1980. Views include: half-length and full-length studio portraits; the Easter performance at the Lincoln Memorial (1939); performing at various functions and on the radio, including views at state functions and social affairs; being congratulated after concert performances; with U.S. presidents John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Jimmy Carter, including one with Kennedy, Vice President Johnson and former Vice President Richard Nixon at the Kennedy inauguration (1961), and with presidential wives Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosalynn Carter; rehearsing with accompianist Franz Rupp and teacher Kurt Johnen; at the christening of the S.S. Booker T. Washington with Mary McLeod Bethune, Booker T. Washington's daughter Portia Pittman, and other dignitaries (1942); her premier performance at the Metropolitan Opera (1955); as a delegate to the United Nations (1958); receiving awards and honorary degrees including those from the Reveille Club of N.Y. (1958), the NAACP's Spingarn Medal (1939), and Order of African Redemption (1943); her farewell cross-country tour (1964-1965); the celebration in her honor at Carnegie Hall (1977); and photographs of portrait paintings of her by Laura Waring and S. Edmund Oppenheim, a mural of the 1939 Easter performance at the Lincoln Memorial and the U.S. Gold Medallion created in her honor.
