Summary

1. Karel Shook, co-director of Dance Theatre of Harlem, and dance historian Joe Nash review some milestones of black dance in the U.S., including the contributions of Eugene Van Grona, Edna Guy, Joseph Rickard, Thelma Hill and the American Negro Ballet Company, Katherine Dunham, and others. Notable black dancers such as Delores Browne, Sylvester Campbell, Bernard Johnson, and Raven Wilkinson are remembered, as are ballets that provided opportunities for black dancers, such as Ruth Page's La Guiablesse and Agnes de Mille's Black ritual. A color excerpt from Geoffrey Holder's Bele concludes the program.
