Summary

1. Three Asian dancers now working in New York, the Japanese Kabuki dancer Sachiyo Ito, the Indian classical dancer Ritha Devi, and the Korean dancer Sun Ock Lee, discuss the difficulties of communicating through dance, the pitfalls of syncretism, audience attitudes in the U.S. and Europe, different definitions of the term ethnic dance, and differences in the treatment of professional dancers and student attitudes towards their teachers in Asia and the U.S. Each dancer is seen in a brief performance excerpt: Ito in a dance at Japan House, New York; Ritha Devi in Mahari nritya (in color); and Lee in Salpuri (in color), with narration by Beate Gordon.
