Summary
Choreographer Alwin Nikolais reminisces about his early dance studies, which were influenced by the teachings of Louis Horst, and his work at the Henry Street Playhouse. He notes the qualities he seeks in dancers and the role of improvisation in his choreography. He describes the evolution of his groundbreaking work Masks, props and mobiles, and discusses the special capabilities of videodance. The program includes several excerpts from Relay, which he designed for television in 1971, and an excerpt from Limbo (CBS-TV, 1968) featuring Murray Louis, Phyllis Lamhut, and Carolyn Carlson.
