Description
  1. 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. Guests are dance historian Selma Jeanne Cohen and dancers Letitia Ide, formerly with the companies of Doris Humphrey and José Limón, and Lutz Förster, formerly with Pina Bausch's Wuppertaler Tanztheater, and now associate artistic director of the Limón Dance Company. They discuss the affinities of the work of Humphrey, Limón, and Bausch, particularly their shared concern for characterization and dramatic expression. Cohen describes the problems of basing choreography on well-known literary works, as Limón did in The moor's pavane, and notes some present-day approaches to narrative. Förster reviews the resurgence of German modern dance in the 1960s and its cross-pollination with its American counterparts. Dance excerpts include Humphrey's Day on earth, performed by the Daniel Lewis Dance Repertory Company; The moor's pavane, performed by the Limón company with Förster as Iago; Bausch's Arien, performed by the Wuppertaler Tanztheater; and Limón's There is a time, performed by the Limón company. Esoterica balletica features an excerpt from Alvin Ailey's Blues suite, recorded for the film Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater: Three by three, directed by Patricia Birch.
