Summary

1. Guests are three photographers: Steven Caras (a former member of the New York City Ballet), Tom Brazil, and Costas. They discuss various aspects of photographing different types of dance and theatrical forms (ballet, modern dance, and mixed media performances), noting the qualities that make for good dance photography, and its special problems and challenges. As examples, Costas and Caras recall their experiences in photographing George Balanchine and the New York City Ballet; Brazil talks about photographing mixed media performances. Caras also compares his career as a photographer to that as a dancer. The program is profusely illustrated with still photographs by the three guests. In Esoterica balletica, Rick Sheridan, the television director of Eye on dance, describes the 19th-century daguerrotype and its relevance to dance.
