Summary
  1. Photographer Lois Greenfield and William A. Ewing, a curator and author of the recently published book Dance photography (first published in Britain as The fugitive gesture), discuss dance photography as an independent art form. Greenfield describes the evolution of her own work from photojournalism (e.g., documenting a performance) to this more independent approach, in which she and the dancer(s) collaborate to create a unique moment. She contrasts this artistic freedom to the restrictions placed upon publicity photographs for dance companies. Using examples drawn from his book, Ewing surveys some historical collaborations of photographer and dancer, including those of Baron de Meyer and Vaslav Nijinsky, Barbara Morgan and Martha Graham, and George Platt Lynes and George Balanchine. He and Greenfield also discuss the photography of Max Waldman, George Hoyningen-Huene, and Herman Mishkin. Anna Pavlova's propensity towards retouching her photographs is also noted. The program is illustrated with still photographs by Greenfield and others. In Esoterica balletica, dancer Christine Spizzo and costume maker Haydee Morales talk about the construction of tutus.
