Interview with Donald McKayle, preceded by footage of the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Awards ceremony on June 28, 1992, in which he was presented with the Scripps award by Maya Angelou. McKayle looks back upon his career as dancer, choreographer, and teacher, recalling his early performances in Sophie Maslow's The village I knew, with the New Dance Group; his work with the Committee for the Negro and the Arts during the second Harlem Renaissance; his period as a member of Martha Graham's company; his observations of Talley Beatty, Alvin Ailey, and others while he was performing in Herbert Ross's House of flowers; and other events in his life. The program includes extended discussions, illustrated by rehearsal and performance footage, of his works Games, Rainbow 'round my shoulder, and Distant drum, the last commissioned by the American Dance Festival for Chuck Davis's African-American Dance Ensemble. Davis and dancer L. D. Burris contribute their observations of McKayle as a choreographer.
