Summary
  1. Compilation of three rehearsals for the Dance in America program The spellbound child, first telecast on May 25, 1981. In the first rehearsal, choreographer George Balanchine, assisted by Rosemary Dunleavy, works with Christopher Byars, the little boy who sings the title role, and the adult and child dancers who form the ensemble of dragonflies, moths, bats, frogs, and toads. Emile Ardolino, the television director, and designer Kermit Love also appear on camera. The second rehearsal (ca. 2 min.) is a partial run-through of the dance of the shepherds and shepherdesses, accompanied by piano and counts from a woman off-camera. In the third rehearsal (ca. 8 min.), Balanchine works with Rosemary Dunleavy, standing in for Susan Freedman as the Chinese cup, and Mel Tomlinson as the Teapot. Christopher Byars appears briefly at the beginning of the rehearsal, and Arthur Mitchell appears towards the end, suggesting and demonstrating steps.
