- Summary
- Despite its title, this program does not offer an overview of music and dance in Spain, but focuses on an individual artist of Spanish birth. Margarita Guergué, a dancer-choreographer born in Barcelona, performs an improvisational modern dance solo, then discusses her family background, dance training, and approach to performing and choreographing. She talks about motivations for dance, qualities she wants to explore in her choreography, and recurring themes in her work. Responding to questions and comments from the audience, she describes and demonstrates elements from some of the many dance forms she has studied, among them ballet, contact improvisation, release, and Butō; and discusses improvisation, the use of narrative as structure, her choices of music for dance, influential individuals in her life (among them Trisha Brown and Kazuo Ohno), and other subjects.
