Summary
  1. Maria Tallchief, a former principal ballerina with New York City Ballet, coaches two current principal dancers, Judith Fugate and Peter Boal, in the pas de deux from George Balanchine's Scotch symphony, created for Tallchief and André Eglevsky in 1952. Tallchief works with the dancers on refining details of the choreography, particularly in movements and positions of the head and upper body. In an interview she recalls watching a ceremony at Edinburgh Castle in 1952, an experience shared with Balanchine which may have been a source of inspiration for Scotch symphony. She, Francis Mason and Nancy Reynolds discuss the mythical figure of the sylph and its modern-day embodiment in this ballet. Tallchief discusses the dramatic quality of the ballet, conveyed largely through gesture. She describes Balanchine's method of choreography, noting his reliance on demonstration rather than verbal explanation, and his attention to detail and musical phrasing.
