Biography
  1. The Negro Ensemble Company, founded in 1967 in New York City, is considered to be the most influential and successful repertory company of the Black Theater Movement. In its more than 29-year history, the company produced more than 200 plays, both off and on Broadway, winning more than 40 major drama awards and training more than 4,000 men and women in all areas of the theater industry. Among its accomplishments are two Tony awards including Best Play for "The River Niger (1972), and a Pulitzer Prize for Charles Fuller as author of "A Soldier's Play" (1982).
  2. Initally funded with a grant from the Ford Foundation, the company was founded by actor-director-playwright Douglas Turner Ward, actor-producer Robert Hooks, and actor-director Gerald Krone. In keeping with its founders' vision, the company fostered the development of plays that were relevant to black life and provided training programs for mostly African-American actors, playwrights, designers, technical staff, and theater administrative personnel. Among the performers who have been associated with NEC are Mary Alice, Roscoe Lee Brown, Rosalind Cash, Adolph Caesar, Samuel L. Jackson, Esther Rolle, Clarice Taylor, and Hattie Winston.
