Biography
  1. Lena Horne, singer and actress, was born in New York City in 1917. Horne, who began her career in 1934 as a chorus line dancer at Harlem's Cotton Club, became one of the first African-American entertainers to perform in "high class" venues, such as the Waldorf-Astoria's Empire Room in New York, and was among the first black stars to have Broadway musicals fashioned for them. In 1941, Horne became one of the first black women to sign a contract with a major studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer. Her film roles include "Cabin in the Sky" (1942), "Stormy Weather" (1943), "The Duchess of Idaho" (1950) and "The Wiz" (1978), among others. Her Broadway shows include "Blackbirds of 1939," "Jamaica" (1957) and her one-woman show "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" (1981). Horne would also make numerous radio and television appearances, and make several recordings, most notably, "Stormy Weather."
