Summary

1. In a series of questions and answers, the interviewees (who include dancers, teachers, adjudicators, and a costume designer) advise dancers and their teachers on participating in dance competitions, with emphasis on personal gains rather than winning. They offer advice on choreography, music, costume, makeup and hairstyle, and age-appropriate material. They also discuss the value of style and presentation, and the importance of technique, and debunk concerns about having a perfect dancer's body or creating a perfect routine. Part of the discussion focuses on lyrical dance [also called lyrical jazz], a relatively new category in competitions. Between the questions, each interviewee is spotlighted in a brief description of his/her credits and current activities. Tony Bougiouris, named Mr. Dance America 1998, is seen in excerpts from his prizewinning solo Nightmare, choreographed for him by Christine Carlson. At the end of the program the main points are reviewed, over footage of a dance class taught by Bob Rizzo.
