Summary
  1. Meredith Monk discusses her family's musical heritage ; her childhood studies of dance and music ; her college years at Sarah Lawrence, where she studied with Bessie Schönberg, Judith Dunn, and Beverly Blossom ; her early interest in mixed media performance. Recalling her early years in New York City, she discusses her friendship with Lucas Hoving (who later performed in her film Book of days) ; the presentation of her work Break ; her participation in Happenings, which expanded her range of thinking ; her discovery of the range and expressive power of her voice. She describes significant works in her creative development, among them Break, 16 millimeter earrings, Blueprint, Juice, Needlebrain-Lloyd and the systems kid, Vessel, Paris/Chacon/Venice/Milan (created in collaboration with Ping Chong), Education of the girlchild, Quarry, Book of days, and Facing north (created in collaboration with Robert Een). She talks about seeking the most eloquent balance of elements in her mixed media works ; making environmental and site-specific works ; the notion of architecture as structural organization of space ; making time and memory a part of the work. The interview is interspersed with excerpts from Facing north, performed by Monk and Robert Een, and recorded at Wisconsin Union Theater in 1995.
