1. Cassette 1. [Spanish dance class] (ca. 65 min.; audio does not begin until 2 min. into tape) / taught by Katherine Dunham ; accompaniment includes recorded flamenco music and live drumming. Dunham discusses "cante jondo," or deep song, a forerunner of flamenco ; and leads the students in various exercises, creating rhythms with castanets, footwork, or hand-clapping. The class also practices choreography set to Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. Continued on cassette 2.

Emilio [Lastarria] and other members of her company demonstrate and lead the class in exercises to be included in the examination: at the barre, an exercise for pelvic opening, the complete set of swings, and an adagio ; various floor progressions. Dunham rarely appears on camera during this segment, but her voice can be heard, giving instructions.
