Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS) (88 min.) : sd., col. SP; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. The history of the American opera Porgy and Bess is explored, starting with the 1925 novel Porgy by DuBose Heyward, adapted to the stage the following year by Heyward and his wife Dorothy. With the subsequent involvement of composer George Gershwin and his lyricist brother Ira the non-musical play became an opera, which premiered in 1935 and has since been revived repeatedly and performed throughout the world. A film version was made in 1959. The work is discussed by musicologists, performers who have appeared in various productions, social historians who examine the piece's racial implications and the controversies it has inspired, and others.
