Summary

1. Dr. Richard Bachrach is introduced by Jacob's Pillow associate director Norton Owen, and speaks to Jacob's Pillow dance students about how to prevent and treat dance injuries. Dr. Bachrach demonstrates points about anatomy, injuries and stretches using students as models. Dr. Bachrach discusses the importance of warming up before dancing, stretching and strength training; causes of injury; growing pains; the functions of specific muscles and how to strengthen them; how to test for and increase turnout; the risks of improper use of muscles and forcing turnout; which muscles are generally weak in dancers; knee problems. There is a break 52 min. into the tape.; some content is missing. When the tape resumes Dr. Bachrach dicusses ankle sprains and fractures; the importance of continuing to dance while injured; the importance of using doctors who are dance specialists; knee surgery and problems; Pilates and other forms of strength building; causes of noises in joints; strain injuries; the use of ice and stretching in healing; tendinitis; stretches for the arches and toes; back injuries and problems, and the effectiveness of chiropractors; bursitis, foot fractures and fallen arches. The tape ends abruptly.
