Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (59 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. Telecast of a PBS documentary, with additional afterword. The documentary features performance excerpts from Holo Mai Pele, a three-hour stage work depicting an ancient Hawaiian legend in dance and chant. Interspersed with the excerpts are Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele's discussion of elements of the performance and views of rehearsals in the halau, or school of hula. Performed in the Hawaiian dance form known as hula kahiko (ancient hula), the performance portrays a legend about Pele, the goddess of the volcano, and her younger sister Hi'iaka. The action is explained through narration, and some of the chants, spoken in Hawaiian, are subtitled in English.
