- Summary
- Librettist John Weidman discusses his career and his various collaborators, including composer Stephen Sondheim and producer/director Harold Prince, and his presidency of the Dramatists Guild. The discussion covers the genesis of Weidman's first show, Pacific overtures, and his later collaborations with Sondheim: Assassins, and Bounce. Also covered is Weidman's work revising the book of Cole Porter's Anything goes, his experience with Jerome Robbins' abortive "Poppa Piece," his stage adaptation of the motion picture Big, his work with Susan Stroman on the show Contact and the possibility of a film version of that show. Weidman and interviewer Ted Chapin, who is president of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, also discuss the Dramatists Guild and its work on behalf of playwrights and librettists, how the Guild differs from the other theatrical unions, how Broadway is changing and how the Guild is responding to the changes.
