  4. The Knee plays (dramatic interludes) were originally the American part of the opera entitled The CIVIL warS, conceived as a world-wide theater piece to be presented in conjunction with the Olympic games in Los Angeles in 1984. This version of the Knee plays had its premiere in Frankfurt on September 20, 1985. The performance depicted on this videotape seems to be a dress rehearsal for that premiere, held on September 19, 1985.
