- Summary
- Jennifer Tipton discusses her career with Newsday critic Linda Winer. Tony Award-winner Tipton has designed lighting for theatre, dance and opera productions since the 1970s and has taught lighting design at Yale University since 1981. She discusses practicing an art that goes virtually unnoticed by many audiences; how she begins and executes a project; the evolution of theatrical lighting design from a trade practiced by electricians; her early love of dance, and how she became interested in lighting; her work with various choreographers including Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Trisha Brown; lighting for the theater in comparison with dance; her preference for working outside the commercial Broadway theater; the position of the lighting designer in the theatrical creative heirarchy; and the tradition of women in the technical field of lighting design.
