Summary

1. Playwright, librettist and screenwriter Arthur Laurents speaks about his life in the theater with Theater talk hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins. Laurents discusses his decision to work with choreographer Jerome Robbins, whom he admired artistically but disliked personally, on the musical Gypsy; his friendliness toward the show's mercurial producer David Merrick; his involvement, as director, with the show La cage aux folles, and his work with Harvey Fierstein who wrote the book; his self-acceptance as a gay man; his work with Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim on the musical Do I hear a waltz?; his belief in giving his colleagues his honest opinion about their work; his unsuccessful musical Nick & Nora, which he felt was treated unsympathetically by the press; the presence of shows on Broadway which are "not good"; and his desire to concentrate on writing plays rather than musicals.
