Summary
  1. Scola's whimsical historical pageant interweaves historical events and figures with humorous, pointed considerations of life, politics and the inevitability of change. As the French Revolution consumes the land, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette flee Paris to the town of Varennes in a vain attempt to escape execution. Behind the royal couple in a coach of their own, the legendary lover Casanova and the renowned American revolutionary Thomas Paine argue the important issues of the day.
