- Jonathan Zimmerman, a quiet picture framer living in Hamburg, believes that he may be dying from a blood disease. Ripley, a cowboy wheeler-dealer who flits about Europe, finds out about the artisan's illness and uses him as a pawn for French gangster Raoul Minot. Wenders explores the themes of rootlessness and the tenuousness of personality while paying homage to the American thriller. Quotes, cliches, allusions and analogies recall the work of Hitchcock and refer to such films as Johnny Guitar and Taxi driver. (Circulates)
