Summary
  1. Aremis Slake, abandoned by his mother, lives reluctantly with his embittered aunt in New York City. His bleak existence is brightened by Joseph, a mentally handicapped boy, who helps Aremis collect "junk" for the free-form sculptures he creates for the local community center. One day, Aremis's friend is hit and killed by a car trying to help Aremis escape a gang of bullies. Feeling guilty and hopeless, Aremis flees his home and goes into hiding in New York's subway system. There, a Vietnam veteran and a coffee shop waitress feed and protect him as he tries to survive in the world of the homeless.
