Summary

1. In this program cellist Fred Sherry and accompanying musicians play music by John Zorn. The performances are interspersed with a panel discussion led by Charles Wuorinen. Sherry speaks about how he discovered Zorn's music and first met him during the Great day in New York photographic project; Zorn discusses the use of numerology in the composition 777, his compositional motives and working method, and the themes explored in Amour fou and Untitled, which was inspired by the artist Joseph Cornell. The three panelists discuss the range of their musical interests, and about public attitudes towards new and old music. Zorn speaks about his use of improvisation and his feelings about the expressiveness of music. 777 is performed in its entirety twice, at the beginning and end of the program.
