- Summary
- Beverly Sills interviews Andre Kostelanetz. Kostelanetz recalls the start of his musical career during the Russian Revolution, and his meetings with well-known Russian composer Alexander Glazunov, director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory at that time. He also talks about his career on radio. The conversation continues with recollections of Rosa Ponselle, Jascha Heifetz, Lily Pons and the Chesterfield Hour, a pioneer concert series in the 1930's. (These programs are now in the Library of Congress). They discuss a Promenade Concerts, which Konstelanetz initiated at Lincoln Center in 1963. The following musical works are played during the interview: Glazunov's Autumn (Andre Kostelanetz, conductor); Copland's Lincoln portrait (A. Kostelanetz conducts the New York Philharmonic ; Carl Sandburg narrates); Bachianas brasileiras, no. 4 (H. Villa-Lobos, composer ; A. Kostelanetz, piano)
