Summary

1. Mariko Tanabe (dancer) discusses her first introduction to Erick Hawkins; how her dance training and career led her to Hawkins' classes with Randy Howard in 1983; her spiritual connection to Hawkins and his aesthetic; the structure of the company and how it allowed for a particular experience for her; being an understudy for 3 1/2 years and watching rehearsals and performances; touring with the company; Hawkins working with the lighting designer Robert Engstrom; how Tanabe learned roles and studied the notation in Hawkins' book to aid with this process; performing her first work, Classic kite tail, with the company at Alice Tully Hall in 1987; Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen being influenced by Hawkins which helped her to develop Body Mind Centering; how the company changed after Hawkins' stroke in 1988; creating New Moon; her decision to leave the company in 1995 and move back to Montreal; concludes with the current dance scene in Montreal and the upcoming Hawkins performance at the symposium.
