- Lillo Way (dancer) discusses the first time she saw the Erick Hawkins Dance Company at Univ. of Maryland in 1966; Hawkins coming to Governor's School for a two week residency; Way's dance training at Juilliard, and with Merce Cunningham, and Twyla Tharp; joining the Hawkins company in 1969; how she learned roles previously danced by other dancers from Hawkins and Beverly Brown; traveling and performing during the quartet tours; taking the 4:30 company class and how Hawkins often talked through the entire class; Way's decision to read everything Hawkins was reading so she should relate to the talks and ask questions; description of the Hawkins Studio at 78 Fifth Ave.; how company members were not allowed to take dance classes at other studios but could take yoga; Hawkins dancers forming their own company entitled, Greenhouse Ensemble; creating new works including Classic kite tails, Dawn dazzled door, and Of love; the experience of performing Of love at the premiere on Broadway when the choreography was not finished yet; her experiences with Lucia Dlugoszewski; why she left the company in 1972; how should Hawkins legacy be continued; her connection to the Hawkins' conductor, Gerard Schwarz; and how Hawkins related to changing times in society and new approaches to dance and choreography.
