Description
  1. 1 audio disc (54:49) : digital, stereo; 4 3/4 in. +
Summary
  1. Author Max Wilk talks with dancer Kate Friedlich, who injured her ankle during the opening night of the premiere Broadway performance of "Oklahoma!" (1943). Friedlich discusses her injury, her working relationship with Agnes de Mille, her jealousy of fellow dancer Joan McCracken (who took her dance part), the other shows she performed in ("Very warm for May", "Hiya gentleman" (didn't make Broadway), "Banjo eyes", "Star and garter"), what the dancers' costumes felt like while dancing, and how she loved working with Oscar Hammerstein in her first show "Very warm for May". Wilk also tells Friedlich the story of how Larry Hart said no to making [Green grow the lilacs] into a musical at first, and Dick Rodgers producing the hit show "Best foot forward" (Rodgers's name was not on it so as not to hurt Hart's morale; it was also produced by George Abbott), which eventually did bring both Rodgers and Hammerstein together. Friedlich and Wilk also talk about other musicals, like "Carousel" and "On your toes".
