Summary
  1. Harry Warren, a composer and lyricist who wrote songs primarily for films, speaks about the impact of publicity; the long lasting success of musicals in Europe; the humble beginning of his music career (he played the piano for silent movies and later led a band in the Navy during World War I); the gradual success of his songs in the 20s; the typical work practices in Hollywood studios; the success of the musical films on which he worked (42nd Street, Gold diggers of 1933 etc.); performers such as Al Jolson, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby whose special charisma can turn a song into a hit; head of Fox Studio Darryl Zanuck and head of MGM Louis B. Mayer as personalities and executives; his long and productive collaboration with the lyricist Al Dubin, and after the latter's death, with Billy Rose, Mack Gordon, Leo Robin, Ira Gershwin and Johnny Mercer; his love for the composer Puccini and his taste in music; and recounts many experiences from his long career in the film industry.
