Balick (Vice President for Botanical Science, Director and Philecology Curator, The New York Botanical Garden Institute of Economic Botany) discusses the mounting of the exhibition, Wild Medicine; his field of Ethnobotany, which is the study of relationships between plants, people, and culture; various places he has conducted research; codifying plant knowledge; The Italian Renaissance Garden at the New York Botanical Garden being a recreation of the original Botanical Garden at the University of Padua, established in 1545; the library at the New York Botanical Gardens; discussion of various plants and their healing/medicinal properties including Kava, Chamomile, Foxglove, Pot Marigold, Passion Flower, Grape, Opium Poppy, Poison Hemlock, English Yew; and examples of witches brew (flying ointments, originally rubbed on skin) including Henbane, Belladonna, Love-in-Idleness; talk of Dr. Mariani's Coca Wine produced from 1863-1913 with cocaine; and an audience experiment with spearment rubbed on fingers which is then tasted in the mouth.
