He describes his relationship with mentor Oscar Hammerstein, and speaks of other teachers who have influenced his work. The importance of collaboration is examined. In addition to discussing his songwriting process, Sondheim touches on a number of his shows as composer and/or lyricist, including West side story, Gypsy, Do I hear a waltz?, Company, Follies, Merrily we roll along, and Sunday in the park with George.
