  2. From the New York Times, Oct. 5, 1987: "'Nohido' means 'blood pact' in the Senegalese dialect . . . [The piece begins] with the reconciliation of two rival chiefs. To seal their relationship, they institute the custom of circumcision as a symbol of the blood pact . . . Most of the production concerns events after the rebellious son of a chief breaks off his arranged marriage with the daughter of another chief. The young man is then pursued by evil spirits, but after receiving a magic talisman from a blind seer, his rejected fiancee rescues him, and he returns repentent to beg his father's forgiveness."
