  3. Text of the romance begins, leaf [i]b: Pour exciter et esmouuoir les cueurs des nobles ...
  4. The attribution to "Luce cheualier seigneur du chasteau de Gast" (Luces de Gast) is unfounded. "It is said elsewhere in the work that he [Luces] abandoned his labours through death and that the completion is due to Hélie de Boron, which appears to be a pseudonym (through the influence of Robert de Boron) representing an entirely fictional person. There is disagreement about what is meant to be credited to Luce and whether or not he existed as a real person"--Oxford dictionary of national biography, under "Gast, Luce of."

  6. Place of printing from title page; name of publisher from colophon, which reads: Cy finist le second et dernier volume fait & compile a lhonneur & memoire du tres vaillant, noble & excellent cheualier Trista[n] filz du noble roy Meliadus de Leonois. Imprime a Paris pour Anthoine Verard ...

  10. Printed in 2 columns. Bastard type; 40 lines.
  11. Illustrations: 7 woodcuts, comprising 2 full-page cuts (leaves a1r, K2r); 4 three-quarter page cuts (including 1 repeat) (leaves A1r, C5v (repeated N4v), D6r); and 1 half-page cut within four-piece historiated and ornamental woodcut border (leaf y4v). Half-page cut is a battle scene from Jean Bonhomme's Destruction de Troie series (Bonhomme's edition of Jacques Milet's Istoire de la destruction de Troye la grant, 1484); others from this series were used by Verard in his editions of Les commentaires de Iulius Cesar (1486, 1488) and Christine de Pisan's Lart de cheualerie selon Vegece (1488); one side piece shows David with the head of Goliath. Remaining cuts belong to Verard's romance series. See Pollard (cited below).
