Summary
  1. Depictions of some aspects of actress and singer Pearl Bailey's career as a performer and a government appointee, from the 1940s to the 1980s. The collection consists of studio portraits of Bailey (ca. 1940s-1950s) probably used for publicity purposes; publicity photographs featuring Bailey from the theatrical production "Hello, Dolly!" (1967) and a separate unidentified production; and views of Bailey in an unidentified concert performance; addressing the United Nations General Assembly as special representative to the UN (ca. 1980s); and with President George H.W. Bush, First Lady Barbara Bush and singer Kenny Rogers, attending the Very Special Arts Festival at the White House (1989).

  2. One photograph bears photographer's hand stamp on verso; one item bears photography studio's name printed on recto. Some items bear printed captions on recto. One image is matted.
  3. The images, most bearing inscriptions from Bailey, were included in correspondence between Bailey and her close friend Lillian Morrison, an author and editor of books for children and young adults, and a librarian with the New York Public Library.
  4. Collection contains work by Harry Rossner and K Progress Studio.

  1. Pearl Bailey, 1918-1990, was an African American singer and actress best known for her performance in the 1967 all-Black cast Broadway production of "Hello, Dolly!" Beginning in the 1940s, Bailey pursued a successful career as a nightclub singer, television performer, and stage and screen actress, as well as authoring six books and serving a special ambassadorial appointment to the United Nations.
