Summary
  1. "This book explores the rationale for an Active Labour Market Policy and shows that despite its merits, it delivered mixed outcomes. Though it helped East German citizens and communities enjoy relative social peace and a measure of economic regeneration, it imposed a heavy cost on the German State and was illsuited to respond to the enduring spatial deficiencies of the East German territory. The author applies her analysis of the German experience to the outlining of employment policy reforms to the 'social market economy' and proposes some broader reflections around the notion of 'social contract' in the context of economic and welfare restructuring." "This is a major contribution to the literature on economic change and labour market restructuring over and above the case-study of Germany."--BOOK JACKET.
