Based on data from the 1991 Census of Population, the Labour Force Survey, the National Travel Survey and data from completed questionnaires and in-depth interviews of 25 long-distance commuters and interviews with seven commuter spouses in 1997, discusses the incidence of weekly commuting, the stress of this lifestyle on both commuters and spouses, and the level of employer flexibility towards employees who commute. Covers the 1980s and 1990s.
