Summary
  1. First in a series by the Conservation of Human Resources of Columbia University, this volume explores the impact of the computer-communications revolution on the employment of workers, especially women and minorities. The authors identify general trends in the workforce since 1960, and discuss the effects of computers on the kinds of jobs filled by women, and the diminishing opportunities for employment available to those with limited formal education. Based on extensive field research of companies, they argue that the computer-communications revolution is leading to widespread upskilling of work, and that this is a major threat to those who are least prepared, least educated, and least trained. The authors stress the need to strengthen the relationship between the educational system and the labor market, and to bolster programs that integrate labor and disadvantaged workers.
