Summary
  1. Labour-management committees in unionized organizations in Canada were studied to determine their extent, nature and workings. Following a review of the literature, Labour Canada data, sample collective agreement LMC provisions and a survey were each examined. Results indicated that LMC's may be found in every industry in every jurisdiction in Canada, the greatest number are in Education and Manufacturing (although the federal government has the highest incidence). The Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Steelworkers similarly have the greatest number of LMC provisions while the Canadian Paperworkers have the highest incidence. Labour-management committees are generally established by collective agreement negotiations for the purpose of providing an open forum for the consultation between the parties on matters of mutual interest. Survey respondents on the whole found that the committee succeeds in improving communiations and leads to fewer grievances and better labour relations. The committee is also found, however, to be somewhat time-consuming and lacking in real authority.
