New York: Forṿerṭs, 1897
The iconic New York-based Yiddish daily was established in April 1897 by a group of socialist immigrants from Eastern Europe and is widely recognized as the world’s leading Yiddish newspaper that is in publication. In its heyday, circulation reached 275,000, but original copies of the newspaper from its early years are extremely rare.
The Sunday edition of Forṿerṭs for May 2, 1897, is unique since it represents the only copy of the earliest known surviving issue in the world of this famous newspaper.
The first page shown here announces the upcoming benefit event at the popular Windsor Theater to celebrate Jacob Gordin (1853–1909), a renowned Yiddish playwright, with a performance of his play Der Vilder Kenig (The Wild King). On the right is an announcement of the publication of the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx in the Yiddish magazine Tsukunft (Future). The Sunday edition’s first page also promoted furniture sales for the immigrants who wanted to move to the cooperative colonies in the West established by the American Socialist Eugene V. Debs (1855–1926).
