A coded language of textures, hues, and lengths, hair, specifically Black Hair has allowed Black Women to assert agency and freedom in flow with gravity. Black hair especially has a wide variety of textures and has the ability to be styled to create new ways of self expression. Inspired by Winifred Hall Allen’s photograph A hairstyle and Lilac Beauty Shop, Teen Curators tell hair stories that celebrate the versatility of expression through hair. The series the teens constructed, Pelo Bueno shifts the paradigm of black hair by exploring the accents of hues, shifts of shapes and the variety of textures. By showcasing the multitude of ways that a person can express themselves through their hair, all while presenting the message that all hair is “good hair”.
