Manuel Manilla (1830–1895?) was Posada’s predecessor at the Vanegas Arroyo print shop, and the originator of the calavera designs. Posada drew inspiration from Manilla’s skeleton figures, and with time he adapted them to his own style. Just as with Posada’s illustrations, Manilla’s were also long reused in different broadsides. This one, for example, published several years after Manilla’s death, shows a couple of calaveras—hailed as “the best” (las meras) calaveras in the cemetery— having quite the party, complete with card games, cigars, and tequila. The text encourages the living to clean up the plazas and decorate the streets with flower garlands to help welcome and celebrate calaveras on their day: Day of the Dead.
Manuel Manilla (1830–1895?) fue el predecesor de Posada en la imprenta de Vanegas Arroyo y el creador de estas imágenes de calaveras satíricas. Posada se inspiró en sus diseños esqueléticos y, con el paso del tiempo, las adaptó a su propio estilo. Al igual que con las ilustraciones de Posada, las de Manilla se reutilizaron en diferentes hojas volantes. Por ejemplo, esta pieza, publicada varios años después de su muerte, muestra un par de calaveras en tremenda parranda que incluye naipes, cigarros y tequila. Uno de los encabezados las anuncia como las meras calaveras del panteón y los versos exhortan a todos a limpiar las plazas y a adornar todas las calles con guirnaldas de flores para que los vivos reciban y celebren a todas las calaveras en su día.
