Bettye Lane was a photojournalist best known for her work documenting feminist activism in the United States, working for the National Observer, Time, Life, and the Associated Press. The New York Public Library has a collection of her work that focuses on LGBTQ+ civil rights. In this picture, Lane documented activist Sylvia Rivera’s iconic “Y’all better quiet down” speech at the Christopher Street Liberation Rally in 1973. Rivera interrupted the rally to protest the exclusion of trans and gender non-conforming people from the then budding mainstream of lesbian and gay politics.
