Seen = Expression
Self-expression often requires an audience. For LGBTQ+ artists, the degree to which artistic expression can be overt depends much on the place and time in which they live. Art created by LGBTQ+ people in repressive environments sometimes deals in metaphor or code so that it might remain unseen by some while being visible to others.
This section contains works of LGBTQ+ artistic expression. From a late 19th century English novel that shocked audiences with its forthrightness, to a psychedelic zine published by queer youths in 1960s San Francisco, these pieces—though very different from each other—each represent an LGBTQ+ artist or artists who sought to be seen in order to show others what was on their minds and in their hearts.
