The Langston Hughes Legacy Society recognizes the generosity of individuals who have listed the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture as a beneficiary in their wills or living trusts, or of their retirement plans, financial accounts, or life insurance policies.

Named for one of the most prolific African-American writers of the 20th Century, Langston Hughes Legacy Society members ensure that future generations have access to the wide range of services offered at the Schomburg Center, from essential education programs to renowned collections that preserve the rich history of black life in America and around the globe.

Langston Hughes came to New York in the 1920s and joined other writers and artists in creating what would become known as the Harlem Renaissance. The Langston Hughes Collection at the Schomburg Center includes a wealth of invaluable materials such as Hughes's essays, letters, and manuscripts.

To join the Langston Hughes Legacy Society, simply inform us that you have:

  • Named the Schomburg Center as a beneficiary in your will or living trust
  • Named the Schomburg Center as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, financial account, or life insurance policy.
  • Established a charitable gift annuity or other gifts for which you receive lifetime income in return

As a member of the Langston Hughes Legacy Society, you will receive:

  • Invitations to exclusive events, curator-led tours, and author talks
  • Subscriptions to Library donor publications (your gift will be acknowledged in these publications and the Library's Annual Report unless you prefer to remain anonymous)
