Brooklyn: David James Press, 1987
In the early 1980s, the David James Press in Brooklyn began producing travel maps tailored to the needs of gay and lesbian customers. The maps showed the locations of businesses like lesbian bars and gay bookstores, allowing locals and tourists alike to know exactly where to go to find community and safe spaces.
The New York Public Library's Map Division holds David James Press maps for New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Puerto Rico, and other places, with imprints dating from 1983 to 1991. The businesses mapped and featured in advertisements form a rich resource for the study of gay and lesbian culture of the time.
