Columbia Fun Maps, Mapping the Gay and Lesbian World: Manhattan
Columbia Fun Maps, Mapping the Gay and Lesbian World: Manhattan
New York: Columbia FunMaps Company, 1992
The Columbia FunMaps Company claimed to cover "the Gay and Lesbian World." They issued travel maps for American cities like New York, Atlanta, and Washington, DC, but also for European cities like Amsterdam, Zürich, and Hamburg. This map of Manhattan is one of their earliest.
Of the 26 businesses and organizations with advertisements on the side of the map shown here, only five remain in 2022. Among the survivors is the Lesbian & Gay Community Services Center (now the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center) in the West Village. The former address of the Big Top male go-go lounge is now occupied by a fast-food chain with a history of donating to charities with anti-LGBTQ+ stances.
